Due to withheld local government allocations, Osun State Governor Senator Ademola Adeleke and his family, including music star David Adeleke (commonly known as Davido), personally funded the payment of workers’ salaries in the state for several months, according to Chief Olabode George, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

In an interview with Nigeria FM Info on Saturday, August 16, 2025, George revealed the information in response to rumors that Governor Adeleke was planning to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Regarding the governor’s political stance, George responded, “I had had an in-depth discussion with him, and the first time we spoke, he called me and informed me that he would be leaving the party. I was shell-shocked, and I said to him, Your Excellency, please think very carefully. And deeply, too. Because, now, he hadn’t been paid.”

He added; “The state had not been paid their local government allowances from the federation account. And the federal government is owing Osun about five point something or six point something billion. That he had had to carry the burden between him, his older brother, and the son of the brother, the musician (Davido). So they were being funded, because people believed in them. And people believed that, and he said, if they believe in him, he has to ensure that they go home with their salaries. So they’ve been funding him.”

When asked if the governor and his family actually used their personal funds to pay employees, George said, “Yeah. For the last five, six months. They haven’t received a single drop. When they go to court, already court has ruled that they should pay them the local government allowances. Or allocation. Nobody has done that.”

Citing the untimely death of his older brother, Senator Isiaka Adeleke, and the potential for internal party strife, the PDP leader went on to say that he had cautioned Governor Adeleke to exercise caution in his political actions: “And I said, please be careful. I beg you in the name of the God, almighty God that you serve. Your older brother, you remember how he was manhandled, and how he passed on? And you shouldn’t go into any mistake. If you get there with your people, and you go for primaries, if they organize any primaries, and they just announce somebody else. Please be careful.”

George disclosed that during the most recent National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the PDP, Governor Adeleke reaffirmed his loyalty to the party. “And so the last NEC meeting we had, I was sitting and waiting for the meeting to commence. And all of a sudden, I saw Ademola Adeleke. I said, are you kidding? Your Excellency. And he came to me. He said, Baba, thank you, sir. I am not leaving this party. So I held him,” George recounted.
