In anticipation of the general elections in 2027, a group of All Progressives Congress (APC) supporters in Zamfara State have encouraged Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, the party’s national chairman, to oppose Governor Dauda Lawal’s attempt to join the APC.
In a sharply worded statement released on Wednesday, the group, operating under the Zamfara APC Supporters (ZAS) banner, accused the governor of planning to defect in order to evade corruption investigations.
The group’s leader, Comrade Muttaka Ibrahim Ruwan Bore, asserted that the governor is trying to use the APC as a shield because he is afraid of being prosecuted for his ties to former Central Bank Governor Godwin Emefiele and former Petroleum Minister Diezani Alison-Madueke.
He explained the defection as an attempt to unite with the ruling party in order to have a “soft landing.”
“Dauda always boasts that the people voted for him. We are saying he should remain in the Peoples Democratic Party and test his popularity to see if he can secure even 20 percent of the votes.“
“We are not asking him to join us, but it would be better for him to test his popularity come 2027.”
“Governor Dauda wants to reap where he did not sow,” Bore added. “We, the APC members in Zamfara, are satisfied with our current leaders and do not welcome an additional burden.”
Prominent APC leaders in the state, including former governors Bello Matawalle, Abdul’aziz Yari, Mamuda Shinkafi, and Ahmad Sani Yarima, were also cited by the organization as leaders who had continuously maintained the party’s grassroots strength.
In addition, Bore said that Governor Dauda’s attempt to defect was a premeditated political ploy in case he was not re-elected in 2027. He underlined the party’s anti-corruption position:
“Our party is corruption-intolerant,” he said. “We cannot accept anyone with baggage from past misdeeds.”
Governor Dauda, a former banker who won the 2023 governorship election under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has remained under investigation for his connections to divisive personalities.
Because of the lasting impact of its previous governors, the APC is still a strong force in Zamfara even after losing the most recent governorship race.
The ZAS group advised APC members to exercise caution as the political climate starts to change in anticipation of the 2027 elections:
“We will continue our advocacy and ensure that our party remains a home of integrity,” Bore said.
