On Wednesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky urged the United States to impose further sanctions on Moscow, claiming that Russia’s actions showed it was not committed to peace following a series of drone strikes that caused damage in multiple locations.

Zelensky highlighted the attacks on his hometown of Kryvyi Rih and the northern Sumy region, as doubts arose over the specifics of two ceasefire agreements announced by the United States on Tuesday after discussions in Saudi Arabia.

The U.S. stated that it had reached separate agreements with Ukraine and Russia to halt strikes over the Black Sea and to suspend attacks on each other’s energy infrastructure. However, the timing of these agreements’ implementation remained unclear.

The Ukrainian president insisted that the deals were effective immediately, but the Kremlin responded by saying that the Black Sea agreement would only take effect once certain Russian banks were reconnected to the international financial system.

Moscow further stated it was already observing its pause on energy-related attacks.

Although Ukraine did not claim that Russia had attacked energy infrastructure overnight, Zelensky emphasized that these actions contradicted the spirit of peace talks. “Carrying out such large-scale strikes after ceasefire negotiations is a clear indication to the world that Moscow is not seeking genuine peace,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Russia, which only reports the destruction of drones, claimed to have destroyed nine, including two over the Black Sea. Moscow also said Ukraine had attempted to target a gas storage facility in Russian-occupied Crimea and energy infrastructure in Russia’s Kursk and Bryansk regions.

At the time of writing, Kyiv had not provided an immediate response.

The Ukrainian military reported 117 drone strikes, and local authorities noted that Kryvyi Rih had suffered its largest drone attack since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022.

Oleksandr Vilkul, the head of the military administration, wrote on Telegram that the attack had caused fires and structural damage.

“Apparently, this is how the occupiers want peace,” he said, adding that there were at least 15 explosions in the city, which has frequently been targeted throughout the war.
