A 100-level student at Taraba State Polytechnic, Iorhee Saanmoyol Paul, is currently battling a life-changing challenge after surviving a horrific electrocution that led to the amputation of both of his hands.

The event happened on May 21, 2025, near the polytechnic gate along the Roadblock to ATC Road in Jalingo, the state capital.

ZINGTIE discovered that while hoisting a PDP flag, the student got electrocuted.

A significant electric shock was caused when the flagpole’s metal handle unintentionally came into touch with a high-tension electric cable.

Due to the severity of his injuries, he was referred to the National Orthopaedic Hospital located within the Taraba State Specialist Hospital after being quickly taken to Gilead Hospital in Jalingo for emergency medical care.

On June 19, 2025, after 28 days in critical care, doctors attempted to save his life by performing a double amputation.

Concerned individuals and stakeholders have demanded additional action to support Paul’s rehabilitation and future livelihood, even though the state government has taken on responsibility for his medical expenses.

Iliya Kefas, the Coordinator of Operation Keep Taraba Clean, said in a statement that she was hopeful Paul would recover and asked the government to help by offering vocational training and prosthetic limbs.

Paul, who is still receiving medical treatment, expressed his sincere gratitude for the help he has had but has also asked for more help to help him become independent again.

“My joy today is that I am alive, but I couldn’t fulfill my plans in life. When I woke up in the hospital, I asked myself, ‘Why am I alive?’ But the scripture says there is nothing you can give in exchange for your life. So I must thank God,” DAILY POST quoted the student saying.

Paul added, in a tone that was both thankful and sorrowful, “Today, my classmates are writing their first-semester exams, and I’m here. That’s God.”

Paul’s family praised the state government’s efforts but emphasized the need for ongoing assistance to help him adjust to his new situation and live a fulfilling life in spite of his physical limitations.
