Bangor University has received a historic donation of over £10 million from the Albert Gubay Charitable Foundation. This generous gift marks the largest donation in the university’s history and is believed to be the largest donation to any university in Wales.

The significant contribution comes at a time when many universities, including Cardiff University, are facing financial challenges. However, Bangor University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Edmund Burke, is optimistic about the future, saying, “This extraordinary contribution will inspire future generations and elevate Bangor University’s reputation as a centre of academic excellence.”

The donation will enable the establishment of the Albert Gubay Business School, with construction set to begin in 2026 and expected to be completed by 2027. Professor Burke added, “This donation will not only elevate Bangor University’s reputation but also open up further opportunities for students to make a significant impact in the business world.”

The Vice-Chancellor acknowledged the challenging financial landscape for universities but emphasized the importance of strategic investments. “Although the financial landscape for universities is currently challenging, strategic investments in key areas like this are instrumental in ensuring the long-term sustainability and growth of our institution,” he said.

The Albert Gubay Charitable Foundation was established by Albert Gubay, the founder of the Kwik Save supermarket chain. Gubay, who was born in Rhyl, Flintshire, amassed a fortune of over £1 billion before his passing in 2016. In 2011, he was honoured by the Pope for his charitable work.

A spokeswoman from the Albert Gubay Charitable Foundation expressed the foundation’s pride in supporting the visionary project. “The Albert Gubay Business School will be a place where students can grow, innovate, and become the entrepreneurs of tomorrow. We believe it will help shape the future of business education, both in north Wales and beyond,” she said.

The donation is a testament to Albert Gubay’s legacy and his commitment to giving back to the community. Half of his £1 billion fund is distributed to charitable causes identified by the Roman Catholic Church, while the other half supports good causes selected by the foundation’s trustees.
