A tragedy occurred in the Netherlands when Ryan al Najjar, an 18-year-old Syrian Muslim girl, was brutally killed by her own family because they believed she was “too westernized.”
According to reports, Ryan’s father and brothers, who thought her way of life was dishonorable, tied her up with tape and drowned her in a ditch.
Outrage over the horrific incident has rekindled conversations about the perils of so-called “honor killings” in some societies.
Police detained the suspects, who allegedly justified their acts by saying that these kinds of murders are “normal” in their society.
But violence under the guise of cultural customs is not acceptable in the Netherlands, and the men are now facing harsh legal repercussions.
Ryan, who had been living with her family in the Netherlands, reportedly caused strife in her home by adopting elements of Western culture.
She was characterized by friends and classmates as a brilliant, self-reliant young lady who just desired freedom.
Debates concerning women’s rights, cultural integration, and the pressing need to shield young girls from abusive family control have been stoked by her terrible demise.
While investigations are ongoing, Dutch officials have pledged to ensure Ryan receives justice.
