A 200-level male student of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) has reportedly taken his own life due to the economic hardship facing his family. The deceased, a student from the Faculty of Communication and Information Sciences (CIS), was said to have had a promising academic record with a cumulative aggregate of 4.5 in the Department of Mass Communication.

According to sources within the university community, the student’s struggles with financial challenges had been ongoing, and his colleagues had even raised funds to support him with tuition fees and basic necessities. However, despite their efforts, the student reportedly felt overwhelmed by his circumstances.

Tragically, the student decided to end his life by consuming a poisonous substance, leaving behind a note for his roommate explaining his inability to cope with the financial struggles. His roommate discovered the note and raised the alarm upon returning from lectures.

A senior administrative officer, who wished to remain anonymous, confirmed the incident to journalists on Tuesday. “The incident is shocking, and it has thrown the university and the students into a mourning mood,” the officer said.

The university community is still reeling from the news, and many are calling for increased support for students struggling with financial hardship. As one source noted, “The deceased student’s struggles were not unique, and it highlights the need for the university and the government to do more to support students in need.
