Ahead of the general elections in 2027, the African Democratic Congress, ADC has established a chapter in Borno State and promised to mount a strong challenge to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.
Sheriff Banki, the state’s movement’s convener, revealed the information at the unveiling ceremony on Thursday in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State.
Banki charged that the APC was silencing alternative voices and dissent throughout the state.
“Borno is in dire need of opposition parties. As far as we are concerned, there is no opposition in the state,” he said. “But starting from today, with the unveiling of this ADC, there will be strong opposition that can hold the government accountable and ensure proper checks and balances.”
He characterized the coalition as a forum for credible alternative leadership and said that the ADC’s foray into Borno is in line with a larger national coalition movement that aims to oppose APC influence or control.
He stated that the movement will back the party’s presidential candidate in 2027 and that its members are dedicated to presenting a united face.
“We can win. What has always held us back is manipulation both from within and outside the opposition. With commitment and courage, we can challenge the system and succeed,” he said.
Banki named a number of political figures and defectors who had joined the ADC in the state, including former NNPP candidates for governor, former PDP treasurers and secretaries, former members of the House of Assembly, and other interested parties.
