In his attempt to unseat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has reiterated that the coalition of opposition forces he is supporting will embrace any platform that guarantees decent government.
During a meeting with a group of National Opinion Leaders on Tuesday, Atiku made the announcement.
On Wednesday, he promised in a video of the meeting posted on his X handle (previously Twitter) that the “coalition train has left the station and would have multiple stops to bring on board Nigerians of all shades.”
His remarks were made barely two days after the PDP Governors’ Forum disassociated itself from any planned coalition or merger in front of the general elections in 2027 at the conclusion of their meeting in Ibadan.
In March, Atiku declared that a coalition of opposition parties will be formed to oppose President Tinubu’s reelection campaign.
He was accompanied at the announcement by former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, who recently defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Social Democratic Party (SDP), and Dr. Yunusa Tanko, who was representing Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party.
There were great hopes that the PDP governors’ meeting in Ibadan would shed light on the party’s position on the partnership, especially since Atiku and other coalition members recently visited former President Muhammadu Buhari in Kaduna.
The governors, however, distanced themselves from any coalition or merger talks following the Sunday-to-Monday meeting, which was attended by interim PDP National Chairman Ambassador Umar Damagum and other party leaders.
However, they stated that they would be happy to accept any individual, group, or party that wanted to join the PDP to “wrest power and enthrone good leadership in 2027.”
Speaking to the National Opinion Leaders’ youth-dominated group, Atiku advised them to maintain their resolve and resist being influenced by temporary rewards.
“Don’t be disrupted by people giving you pennies or kobos here and there, and nairas here and there, and then abandon your future, and the future of your children,” he said.
“Now, because of that, that’s why a number of us leaders from the parties I have mentioned—APC, PDP, Labour, and others—have come together to say we are going to have what I call in Hausa Sabuwar tafiya, which in English means a new path, a new pathway to a new Nigeria.”
“And we have been meeting, and by the grace of God, very soon we will announce, and we hope and we appeal to you all to be part of this movement.”
According to the former vice president, ensuring excellent governance was the coalition’s main goal.
“Whatever vehicle that will give us good governance in the future of our children and grandchildren, that is the vehicle we are going to ride on,” he declared.
In closing, he exhorted the delegation to begin organizing and rallying support.
“Get to planning and working together and getting as many Nigerians as possible to get converted to this new pathway,” he said.
