Nigeria’s former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, cannot be the opposition party’s 2027 presidential candidate, according to Bode George, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain and member of the party’s board of trustees.
In an interview with Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, he revealed this.
He claims that the PDP’s internal zoning rules prohibits the party from fielding a northern candidate in 2027.
“Atiku can’t be the PDP presidential candidate in 2027. Our internal zoning policy makes it compulsory to be eight years for the South and North. If Atiku emerges as the PDP candidate in 2027 by any means, the party will collapse,” he stated.
Ahead of the 2027 election, the PDP Governors’ Forum rejected the Atiku-led opposition coalition on Monday.
In the 2023 election won by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Atiku was PDP’s presidential candidate.
Last Monday, Atiku, Peter Obi, and Nasir El-Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna State, announced a partnership to overthrow Tinubu in 2027.
