2027 coalition: PDP chieftain tells Nigerians what to look out for

Kola Ologbondiyan, a leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has asked Nigerians to evaluate the opposition leaders in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) based on national concerns rather than personal traits.

In an interview on Channels Television on Friday, Ologbondiyan, who is thinking about moving to the ADC, stated as much.

According to the PDP chieftain, political discourse should be based on the ADC’s policy stances and discussions rather than criticism of party members.

“I think the issues, the conversations which have been raised by the ADC should be of interest to those who are in government and not attacks on personalities,” he said. “We’ve done that over and over; where has it taken the nation to? It hasn’t taken us anywhere.”

Former PDP National Publicity Secretary Ologbondiyan stressed that issue-based politics are essential to Nigeria’s democratic future and urged both politicians and the public to abandon narratives that are centered on personalities.

“If we don’t want to fail this democracy, if we do not want to continue to fail Nigerians, then we should look at issues in the conversation and not personalities,” he added.

“We’ve done that over and over; where has it taken the nation to? It hasn’t taken us anywhere.”

Former PDP National Publicity Secretary Ologbondiyan stressed that issue-based politics are essential to Nigeria’s democratic future and urged both politicians and the public to abandon narratives that are centered on personalities.

His remarks imply a growing affinity with the coalition-backed party, which has recently been advocating for reforms and alternative governing systems, even if he refrained from officially announcing his defection to the ADC.

Speaking about the public’s mistrust of the ADC, Ologbondiyan claimed that many Nigerians incorrectly reject political parties without knowing their platforms.

“When you sit in your house and you think you have the biggest farm, you might not get the advantage to see what the other person is doing because you’re going to judge them on account of what you have in your farm,” he said metaphorically.

His comments coincide with a number of opposition leaders looking at platforms outside of the PDP and APC’s conventional power blocs as political alignments change in the run-up to the 2027 elections.
