After the leaders of the ruling All Progressives Congress, or APC, endorsed President Bola Tinubu for reelection without mentioning Vice President Kashim Shettima, Babagana Zulum, the governor of Borno State, led a protest on Sunday, signaling the impending crisis within the party.

At a North-East stakeholders meeting in Gombe on Sunday, APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje and National Vice Chairman (North-East), Comrade Mustapha Salihu, supported Tinubu for a second term without mentioning Shettima.

Delegates reacted negatively to their failure to support Shettima, forcing Ganduje and Salihu to be hauled out of the arena under strict supervision.

The gathering ended in chaos after the development.

Abdul-Aziz Na’ibi Abubakar, a public affairs analyst, responded to the news by stating that it might be the beginning of a party crisis.

“The beginning of the APC’s downfall has just begun as Governor Zulum led a protest against the APC North-East meeting for failing to endorse Kashim Shettima ahead of 2027!” he wrote on X.

Shettima, who is from the state of Borno in the region, was left out of the APC stalwarts’ endorsement of Tinubu, which caused anger in the Northeast, according to a previous ZINGTIE article.

At the APC’s national summit in Abuja last month, APC chairman Abdullahi Ganduje declared Tinubu as the party’s only 2027 presidential candidate.

Recall that Tinubu criticized the opposition party for being in disarray during his Democracy Day speech at the National Assembly last Thursday.
