Dr. Datti Baba-Ahmed, who was Labour Party’s vice-presidential candidate in 2023, has questioned the unity and electoral chances of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition, claiming that it lacks political figures capable of uniting the party like some of Nigeria’s current and former leaders.

While being interviewed by Trust TV, Baba-Ahmed contended that the ADC lacks individuals with the political influence of former President Muhammadu Buhari or President Bola Tinubu.

“They don’t have a Buhari or a Tinubu in the ADC. Tinubu has a lot of sense. They don’t have it in ADC,” he said.

He cautioned that internal discord might develop based on who becomes the party’s presidential candidate, implying that significant contenders could find it difficult to secure unanimous backing from the coalition.

“Because today, if Atiku wins the ticket, others have a problem with that. If Obi or Amaechi wins the ticket, other candidates will have a problem with it,” Baba-Ahmed stated.

“They don’t have a Buhari in ADC,” he added.

Baba-Ahmed commended Tinubu’s political tactics and experience, characterizing the president as resolute and concentrated.

“Tinubu was focused, resourced, determined. And of course, he has a lot of sense and experience that he applied into this,” he said.

Baba-Ahmed made a reference to what he called a previous political understanding with northern stakeholders by comparing it to former President Goodluck Jonathan’s 2011 election.

“They don’t have a Jonathan in the game. Why do I mean by Jonathan? Jonathan was re-elected in 2011 with the promise to northern elements that he wouldn’t contest 2015.

“So there was a promise issue, and the north felt it was time to go back to the north,” he explained.

He noted that these concerns indicate larger structural challenges within the ADC coalition, and that a more thorough discussion of those issues would necessitate additional time.
