During an interview with THE SUN, Chief Chekwas Okorie revealed that northern political leaders are leaving the All Progressives Congress (APC) to form a strong coalition against President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 election, claiming that many of these leaders feel betrayed after helping Tinubu win in 2023.
According to Okorie, former APC National Vice Chairman Salihu Lukman is a significant participant in the movement.
Lukman and other northern lawmakers are in advanced negotiations with the Social Democratic Party (SDP) to form a new political force.
Okorie feels that this coalition will provide a significant challenge to Tinubu’s re-election campaign.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and his followers have also regrouped.
Okorie said they are reaching out to politicians from different parties to form a united front.
Although they have not yet formed a party, he anticipates a powerful opposition alliance by mid-2025.
Okorie also emphasised the role of former Attorney General Abubakar Malami.
He said Malami is gathering together members of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), which was originally led by former President Muhammadu Buhari.
According to Okorie, Malami and his friends believe the APC no longer represents their interests and are establishing a new political organisation.
While some PDP and Labour Party members are defecting to the APC, Okorie observed that a huge number of northern elites are heading in the opposite direction.
He stated that they feel abandoned by Tinubu’s leadership and are now looking for an alternate platform.
Okorie believes the APC’s dominance is jeopardised if three main political organisations collaborate.
However, he chastised South East political leaders, claiming they are confused and unprepared for the upcoming election.
“The northern political elites are leaving the APC. Whatever El-rufai says today, the truth is that Salihu Lukman, who used to be a stalwart of the APC and so many others in APC are leaving.“
“The chunk of northern APC political leadership would be moving out because they feel betrayed, they feel they were the ones who made Tinubu to succeed in his election, and they had been abandoned as it were. So, they are pulling out.“
“I can tell you that they have gone very far in their conversations with the Social Democratic Party (SDP) by my good friend, Alhaji Shehu Gabam. Atiku and his followers and many are regrouping.“
“Of course, they are reaching out to other people who are even in other parties. They have not chosen a party to use, but that will happen by the second quarter of this year.“
“These three major groupings will merge and come up with a political party that will now pose a major challenge to the ruling party.“
“It is only the South East political leaders that seem completely confused, and they are not doing anything to the best of my knowledge,” he said.
