In order to run against President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections, prominent opposition leaders Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rauf Aregbesola have been urged by former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai to join the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

This appeal comes after El-Rufai resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) on March 10 due to a disagreement with the party’s principles.

He rejected the notion of a merger or the creation of a new party and instead stressed the necessity of opposition unity in an interview with BBC Hausa.

The Presidency, meantime, has downplayed worries over the 2027 elections, claiming that President Tinubu is now more concerned with enhancing the welfare of Nigerians and implementing economic reforms.

Achievements like growing foreign reserves, lower inflation, and a larger trade surplus were highlighted by Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Media and Public Communications.

El-Rufai, however, said he was disappointed with the Tinubu administration and that he had backed the president because of his track record in Lagos.

He also made it clear that the party and the public’s will would determine whether he could run for president in 2027.
