In response to Senator Abdulrahman Kawu Sumaila’s defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC), the Kano State branch of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) said it was a relief for the party.

Kawu’s revelation that he had joined the APC was followed by his defection less than twenty-four hours prior to the statement.

Hashim Sulaiman Dungurawa, the state chairman of the NNPP, told reporters in Kano that Kawu was a disruptive figure and downplayed the importance of his departure.

“We are not surprised because it is something we have been expecting. As far as our party is concerned, we had already suspended him because he had no value to add. That is why he remains irrelevant,” Dungurawa said.

He added that with Kawu’s departure, the party would finally experience internal peace.

“The party will now have peace. He turned out to be a stubborn boy among the children of the party. So, having him out means the party can now focus on what it’s supposed to do, unlike when he was here disturbing the party,” he added.

Dungurawa rejected the idea that the defection may sway other prominent members, such as Kabiru Alhassan Rurum, the former Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly.

“No, don’t bring someone else into this. I’m referring to Kawu alone. Nobody else has said they are leaving the party. The party has indeed suspended others like Rurum, but they have not defected. As of now, they remain in the party,” he said.

Longtime Kano politician and former President Muhammadu Buhari aide Senator Kawu said he joined the APC because I thought it would provide better opportunities for service and government.

Ahead of the federal elections in 2027, Kano State is undergoing continuing political realignments, and his defection is another step in that process.
