Immediate past National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Umar Abdullahi Ganduje, has asserted that the presidential candidates of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Peter Obi and Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, do not possess the grassroots network or regional influence needed to unseat President Bola Tinubu.
“The North is strategic in every presidential election in Nigeria. With due respect to our friends in the opposition, neither Peter Obi nor Atiku Abubakar can mobilise enough support in this region to defeat President Tinubu in 2027,” he said.
The former APC chairman also expressed concern over the increasing number of political parties in the country, urging the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to adopt stricter conditions for party registration.
He maintained that only political parties with effective structures, well-defined ideologies and a nationwide presence should be recognised by the electoral commission.
Ganduje’s remarks come amid ongoing political realignments and consultations among opposition figures ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He insisted that both Peter Obi and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar lack the level of political support required in Northern Nigeria to defeat President Bola Tinubu at the next presidential poll.
Ganduje made the comments during a public event in Kano on Monday, where he assessed the preparedness and strength of opposition parties ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
