2027: I will back anyone that emerges ADC presidential candidate – Atiku

Former Vice President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has pledged his support for whoever emerges as the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the 2026 primaries.

He stated that his backing would not depend on whether or not he secures the party’s ticket.

Addressing members of the party during a reception for new entrants in Lagos State on Saturday, Atiku, a key figure in the coalition, reaffirmed his commitment to unity within the party.

The event saw high-profile members from both the ADC and Labour Party officially joining the coalition.

The new members were received by the party’s National Secretary, Rauf Aregbesola; Senator Kolawole Ogunwale; and the Lagos State ADC Chairman, Mr. George Ashiru.

Atiku, who was represented by Prof. Ola Olateju as the keynote speaker, addressed questions about the party’s forthcoming presidential flagbearer.

“It is not a thing we can predetermine. Whoever emerges through free and fair contests, we are all going to support,” Atiku said.

He stressed the importance of fairness, noting that every aspirant would be given equal opportunity and that the contest would remain open to all eligible participants.

“We are not imposing anyone on the people,” he added.

Atiku also stated that the winner of the primary would serve as a unifying candidate, representing all Nigerians in the national polls.

Among the leading contenders for the ADC presidential ticket are former governors, past presidential hopefuls, and candidates including Chibuike Amaechi, Peter Obi, and Atiku Abubakar himself.
