2027: INEC send strong warning to all politicians

Politicians and political parties have been cautioned by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) not to begin campaigning before the general elections in 2027.

Since INEC has not yet released the schedule for the 2027 elections, it is illegal to run a campaign at this time, according to a statement made by Rotimi Oyekanmi, Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman.

“The Independent National Electoral Commission has not released the timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 General Elections. As such, no political party has conducted primaries or nominated any candidate for the election,”the statement revealed.

The statement reminded legislators that campaigns can only commence 150 days prior to an election and must end 24 hours before the election begins, citing Section 94(1) of the Electoral Act.

The statement also cited Section 95(1), which mandates that all campaigns adhere to INEC’s regulations.

“Even though people have the right to express their political views, organised endorsements, mobilisation efforts, and campaign-style adverts aimed at promoting candidates before the official campaign period are not allowed.

“INEC had already raised this issue in its last meeting with political parties, warning all actors to obey the laws guiding elections.

Before participating in campaign activities, he asked lawmakers and their followers to observe the electoral process and wait for the official schedule.

The warning was issued when more and more posters and public endorsements in favor of President Bola Tinubu’s second term began to surface around the nation.
