The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced a two-week extension of the nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise while unveiling a new online self-service registration platform for first-time voters.

The electoral body disclosed the development in a statement issued on Friday.

The voter registration exercise, which commenced on August 18, 2025, and was initially scheduled to conclude on Friday, July 10, 2026, will now remain open until Friday, July 24, 2026.

According to the commission, the decision followed an assessment of the ongoing exercise as well as consultations with its state offices, political parties, civil society organisations and other relevant stakeholders.

INEC explained that the extension is intended to provide additional time for eligible Nigerians who are yet to register to be captured in the National Register of Voters ahead of future elections.

The commission also announced that it will introduce a fully online self-service registration platform for first-time voters beginning Wednesday, July 8, 2026.

The new digital registration service will be available through the commission’s official portal, cvr.inecnigeria.org.

INEC stated that the platform will enable eligible Nigerians to complete their voter registration process, including biometric capture, using their personal devices from any location without physically visiting an INEC office.

According to the commission, the system has been designed with advanced identity verification, biometric validation and backend security checks to protect the credibility and integrity of the National Register of Voters.

“The extension underscores the Commission’s commitment to ensuring that every eligible Nigerian has a fair and reasonable opportunity to be included in the Register of Voters,” the statement said.

INEC encouraged all eligible citizens who are yet to register to take advantage of the extended registration period and the newly introduced online registration option.

“The Commission remains committed to a credible, inclusive and accessible voter registration process, and to advancing the use of technology to improve citizens’ experience in the electoral process,” it added.
