Ebonyi: Police Make Arrests After Fresh Allegation Against Commissioner Emerges

The Ebonyi State Police Command has arrested Mr Justice Ozobi and his accomplice over allegations involving the Commissioner of Police and the alleged collection of ₦700,000 each from six different families for the release of their sons.

The command had earlier dismissed the allegations as false and misleading.

This was disclosed in a statement issued on Friday by the command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Joshua Ukandu, and made available to journalists in Abakaliki.

According to the statement, the suspect used a photograph of a former Commissioner of Police, Ebonyi State Command, in a social media post, thereby exposing the retired senior police officer to what the command described as unwarranted public ridicule and embarrassment.

The police said the suspect was arrested in Anambra State and subsequently brought to the Ebonyi State Command for questioning.

The command added that further information would be released as the investigation progresses.

It reiterated that members of the public have the right to express their opinions, raise legitimate concerns and make constructive suggestions aimed at improving policing in the state.

However, while acknowledging the right to freedom of expression, the command said it would not permit the intentional circulation of false, malicious or defamatory claims designed to damage the reputation of the command and the police force generally.

“The command remains committed to accountability and will continue to hold its officers to the highest standards of professionalism, discipline and ethical conduct.

“Members of the public are therefore encouraged to verify information before disseminating it and to channel genuine complaints through appropriate authorities for prompt and impartial investigation.”
