The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is considering three Southerners as their 2027 presidential candidates, according to Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro.

Previous President Goodluck Jonathan, Peter Obi, the previous presidential candidate of the Labour Party, and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde have all been floated as potential PDP presidential candidates for 2027, according to Moro.

Moro said that other eligible Southerners are being considered in an interview with AIT’s Focus Nigeria program.

He said: “Some names have been thrown up now that the position has been zoned to the South and all the names have been members of the PDP. Peter Obi because of the perceived unfair treatment of not zoning the position of the president to the South and possibly to the Southeast left PDP. And now the PDP has zoned the position to the South.

“And so Peter Obi you are from the South, left PDP because of the perceived injustice and unfair treatment, now that the thing has been zoned to the South you are welcome to join the race.

“The former president, Goodluck Jonathan is a bona fide and an imminent member of PDP, a statesman per say has been mentioned, Seyi Makinde – the governor of Oyo State has also been mentioned.

“I can assure you that going forward, many more names are going to be mentioned because I insist that PDP as a grassrooted political party has many qualified, imminent and qualified Nigerians from the South that can give a shot at the presidency.

“So let’s watch and see, persuasions are on, contacts are been made, at the end of the day, we will find out who and who is in the running and we will present a candidate that will give the ruling party a run for its money.

“I’m very sure that those people who moved to the ADC especially from the South felt short changed by the 2022 zoning of the party – throwing the position open which created some problems for the party, problems that the PDP is trying to find a solution to.”
