Salihu Lukman, the former vice chairman of the APC North-West, has said that talks are nearing completion to create a single opposition party to run against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections.

In response to Atiku Abubakar’s recent declaration that opposition leaders were forming a coalition to challenge the APC in the upcoming general elections, Lukman made the comment on Monday.

Lukman claims that Abubakar’s statement has generated a great deal of national discussion and that although no decisions have been made yet, talks are well along.

According to him, the primary goal of the negotiations is to convince leaders to pledge to cooperate, even if it means putting aside their individual goals for 2027.

Selecting the political party to provide the coalition’s platform is another crucial step.

Lukman denied media claims that conflicts were hindering the process, but he acknowledged that certain leaders had expressed worries over zoning.

He underlined that only until the coalition has reached a consensus on the party program will the final choice of candidates be finalized.

Lukman revealed that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had thwarted attempts by certain coalition members to form new political parties.

The coalition’s options are further limited by the possibility of de-registration for a number of minor registered parties that did not secure any seats in the most recent election.

He cautioned that postponing the coalition’s formation might result in a one-party government in Nigeria, which would make it impossible for the opposition to run a viable campaign in 2027.

He urged Nigerians to understand the gravity of the problem, emphasizing that a legal knockout that would leave only the ruling APC as a credible alternative could occur if nothing is done by 2027.
