Yakubu Yerima, the chairman of Niger State’s Social Democratic Party (SDP), has denied reports that the party would combine with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), promising that the SDP will continue to be a strong and respected opposition party in the state.

Following a meeting in Minna, the faction’s public relations officer, Mr. Luqma Hussaini, signed a communiqué announcing the formation of the “SDP for ADC Coalition.”

The party’s defectors declared their intention to back the ADC in its fight against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

According to them, “These times do not call for sloganeering, self-congratulation, or political vanity; they demand collective sacrifice, sober reflection, and unified action.”

In order to create a broad-based leadership structure in Niger State, the coalition also announced its plan to interact with other political stakeholders from different parties, such as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP).

The SDP head, however, rejected any merger with another party in a statement titled “DISCLAIMER,” characterizing the new faction as being made up of “faceless people.”

Yerima insisted that no registered member had defected from the party and urged all legitimate members to ignore rumors of defections.

“I urge members to disregard rumours of defections, no registered member has left the party. The party remains a credible and formidable opposition party,” he stated.
