According to Dr. Doyin Okupe, a former director-general of the Peter Obi Presidential Campaign Organisation, the South, not the North, ought to elect the president in 2027.

Okupe stated that it was only right to let the South produce the next president in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, or NAN, on Thursday in Lagos.

Although Atiku Abubakar, the PDP’s 2023 presidential contender, was well qualified to run in 2027, Okupe stated that he did not believe the PDP chieftain should have become president.

The former presidential spokesperson stated that the South should be permitted to serve out its eight-year tenure, just as the North did prior to the arrival of President Bola Tinubu, and that the issue with Atiku’s 2027 presidency is geopolitics rather than age.

“Atiku failed in 2023, not because he was not a good person, but because people felt that a northern Muslim cannot succeed another northern Muslim after eight years.

“If Atiku still contests in 2027, he has a right. He is eminently qualified and one of the best we have, but geopolitics is an issue.

“The conditionality still persists; a southerner would have just completed four years and needs another four-year term.

“It’s not in the constitution, but we agree that when a northerner does his eight years, a southerner will do.

“I do not see any political gang-up working against the President,” Okupe replied when asked if coalitions of politicians and parties might overthrow Tinubu in 2027.

He asserts that partnerships opposing Tinubu will fall through because the parties involved are unwilling to make any compromises.

Regarding the coalition that brought former President Buhari to power in 2015, Okupe stated that despite his criticism of the coalition, Tinubu, its leader, made every concession to ensure its success.

He questioned the readiness and desire of opposition leaders to make concessions for one another, including Rabiu Kwankwaso of the NNPP, Peter Obi of the LP, and Atiku Abubakar of the PDP, who are pondering a coalition against Tinubu in 2027.

“So, the North cannot now terminate the tenure of the South in 2027. It is not going to work,” Okupe said.

According to the former LP leader, Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, may also run for the nation’s top job in 2027 because he is from the South.

However, he stated that Obi would have a very hard time unseating Tinubu as president.
