The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 election, Mr Peter Obi, has stated that he would grant freedom to the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, if elected President of Nigeria.

Obi made the declaration while speaking to Nigerians during an engagement in Washington, where he outlined his approach to addressing issues relating to agitation and national unity.

The former Anambra State governor argued that there was no justification for keeping Kanu in detention solely because of comments and criticisms made through Radio Biafra broadcasts.

According to Obi, lasting solutions to agitation across the country can only be achieved through dialogue, understanding and constructive engagement rather than prolonged confrontation.

He pledged that his administration would prioritize discussions with aggrieved groups and individuals in an effort to promote peace and national cohesion.

The NDC presidential candidate maintained that open communication remains one of the most effective tools for resolving political and social tensions.

Kanu, the leader of IPOB, is currently serving a life sentence at the Sokoto Correctional Centre.

He said: “There’s no reason for keeping Nnamdi Kanu. I will free Nnamdi Kanu as President, he has done nothing wrong, the government has no reason to arrest him because he was speaking and calling people names on radio, it doesn’t make sense.

“Anybody can tell you anything, I’m a politician and people call me all sorts of names and I don’t think calling me names is an offence, it’s not an offence.

“If I am in government today, I will discuss with all agitators because I believe that they have a reason for whatever they want to do and it’s only by engaging them that we would learn, but I’m not in a position to do anything today.”

Obi’s remarks have already generated fresh conversations about the future of separatist agitations and how they should be handled by the Nigerian government.
