2027: Peter Obi Makes Bold Declaration Despite Growing Political Alignments

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has said that President Bola Tinubu’s chances in the 2027 general election will not be determined by the number of governors supporting him.

Obi made the remark during a recent interview in Washington DC, where he reflected on his performance in the 2023 presidential election and the political landscape ahead of the next polls.

According to the former Anambra State governor, he contested the last presidential election without the backing of any state governor but still recorded victories in multiple states across the country.

Speaking on the 2027 election, Obi maintained that political endorsements from governors alone would not decide the outcome of the contest.

“For the 2027 election, it doesn’t matter if all 36 governors are with President Tinubu. I didn’t have a single governor in the last election, yet I won 12 states, even after they stole two states from me.

“By making Abuja a state, we now have 37 states because that’s what the judgment of the Supreme Court showed.

“Senator Rabi’u Kwankwaso won one state, and that was Kano. The APC, PDP and Labour Party won 12 states each. And it, I lost two by the process of rigging, I would have had 12 states,” he said.

Obi argued that the support of the electorate remains more important than political alliances, insisting that the experience of the 2023 election demonstrated that popular support can outweigh the influence of established political structures.

It will be recalled that the former Labour Party candidate finished third in the 2023 presidential election after securing a total of 6,101,533 votes nationwide.
