Bala Mohammed, the governor of Bauchi State, has publicly asked Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the general election of 2023, to rejoin the PDP.
Mohammed, the Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum, said that in order to save Nigeria from the shortcomings of the current government, the opposition must band together.
When Obi visited the Bauchi Government House on Friday, the governor made the plea.
Bala Mohammed praised the former governor of Anambra State for what he called a “new brand of politics” that prioritizes people-focused administration, constructive engagement, and accountability.
“Your Excellency, my brother, we are really delighted by the new lease of life you bring to Nigerian politics,” the governor said in front of reporters, interested parties, and Obi’s Obedient Movement members.
Mohammed recognized Obi’s prior achievements as a governor and the clarity of his vision for Nigeria, praising his legacy in healthcare and education.
“You have spoken on two critical areas — health and education. We know your passion and what you did in Anambra. This is the kind of insight and roadmap we need for Nigeria,” the Bauchi governor said.
“Politics is not about sharing rice during Sallah or Christmas. It is about understanding where the shoe pinches and acting accordingly,” he added.
“Nigerian politics cannot be done with ego, differences, or personal interests. The opposition — PDP, ADC, SDP, LP — must come together. We must harmonize our interests in the interest of the people of Nigeria,” he declared.
“There is no budget, no plan — everything is about politics. We must come together to confront this Goliath and take Nigeria to the promised land with strategy and compassion.
“I told you last night, and I’m saying it again publicly — we want you to come back to PDP. That’s where you belong. Don’t go anywhere else,” Mohammed added.
In closing, the chairman of the PDP Governors Forum reassured Obi of his backing and urged cooperation in order to put up a unified front capable of opposing the ruling party and offering Nigerians a brighter future.
Obi responded by restating the demand for cooperation and a change in the political ethos of the country.
“Your Excellency, let me continue to thank you for your warm reception and cordial relationship. I came to Bauchi to visit two schools of nursing, but beyond that, I came to meet my brother so we can talk about the problems of the people and how to solve them together,” Obi said.
“To all of us in the opposition, it’s important that we work together. It’s no longer about us — it’s about our country. Our politics must change. It must be the politics of development, competence, capacity, and compassion,” he added.
Prior to his visit, the 2023 Labour Party presidential contender gave N15 million to two organizations in the state: N5 million to Intisharu Taufizul Quranic Islamic School in Yelwa and N10 million to Malkiya College of Nursing Sciences.
Obi emphasized the critical role nurses play in healthcare during his speech at the Malkiya College of Nursing. According to him, nurses play a crucial role in the healthcare system and are often even more significant than physicians.
He stated, “This is not about politics — this is about societal progress,” and disclosed that he sponsors 60 to 70 nursing schools in Nigeria each year.
Obi emphasized the value of integrating Islamic education with traditional courses at the Intisharu Taufizul Quranic Islamic School.
“Our children need both Islamic teachings and skills like English and Maths to succeed,” he noted.
Obi also spoke to a group of SUG presidents in a separate event with the topic “Youth and Leadership Opportunity.” He reiterated his commitment to serve a single four-year term if elected president, calling the promise “sacrosanct.”
“Longevity in office is not a mark of success; rather, it is purposeful, accountable service — however brief — that defines true statesmanship,” he told the students.
