Umar Sani, a senior figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), asserted that Northern Nigeria would rather see former President Goodluck Jonathan as the party’s presidential candidate than Peter Obi, who contested under the Labour Party in 2023.
Sani made this statement on Saturday during an appearance on Trust TV’s Daily Politics.
He was addressing rumors suggesting that the PDP is engaging with Obi and weighing the possibility of Jonathan returning for the 2027 presidential race.
Sani emphasized that despite Obi’s reputation for integrity, the PDP and the North should back Jonathan, who is legally limited to a single four-year term, instead of Obi, whose commitment rests solely on personal promises.
Sani, who was the media aide to former Vice President Namadi Sambo, said, “Between somebody making a promise and somebody who is compelled by the law that he must leave, which one will you take?
“He (Jonathan) has to go after four years. This one is making a promise. A promise can be kept and may not be kept either way. But on this one, you are sure that it must be kept. So for the North, I think Goodluck Jonathan is the best choice.”
