Adewole Adebayo, the Social Democratic Party’s (SDP) presidential candidate in the general elections of 2023, has stated that he is prepared to resign his presidential bid in favor of a more qualified candidate to lead his party in the 2027 elections.

Adebayo made this claim during the Sunday episode of Channels Television’s sociopolitical program Inside Sources with Laolu Akande.

“Everybody knows that I have an aspiration. I’m working on it but God is the author of tomorrow; we don’t even know who is going to be around in 2027.

“It is my prayer to God that if there is a person who God thinks is better than me to fix the problem of Nigeria, my ambition should not stop that person because we want a country that works. That is the kind of thing we are working on at this time,” Adebayo said.

He asserted that the SDP will present Nigerians with a candidate in the upcoming presidential election that they could all support and who would be willing to challenge President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress, or APC.

The SDP won’t split Nigerians along the thin lines of religion and ethnicity, he added.

“What used to be an easy discussion – with religion and ethnicity – has become explosive now. So, we will not use the SDP forum to try to bifurcate our people into different zones.

“What we are looking for now is a system where when we make a choice in the SDP, there will be resounding joy outside the SDP and Nigerians will say: ‘Okay, finally, this platform has given the country a chance’,” he added.

On Thursday, March 20, 2025, opposition leader Atiku Abubakar, former Anambra governor Peter Obi, former Kaduna governor Nasir El-Rufai, and others announced a coalition to unseat incumbent Tinubu, whose administration has been accused of mismanaging the economy, with all-time high inflation and an unprecedented cost of living. This announcement marked the culmination of discussions about an inter-party alliance ahead of the 2027 elections.

The coalition is relying on the size of the votes that Atiku and Obi received in the most recent poll.

With a total of over 12 million votes, Atiku of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Obi of the Labour Party came in second and third, respectively, more than four million votes ahead of Tinubu, who was proclaimed the victor by election arbiter INEC in 2023.

Politicians in the three parties appear to have made the SDP their favorite due to a long list of court cases stemming from intra-party disputes, prolonged leadership crises that have rocked the PDP and the LP, and alleged abuse of certain APC members.

El-Rufai has already joined the SDP, as have a few of his foot troops.

Although there have been rumors that Atiku and Obi are considering joining the SDP, neither candidate has yet announced their choice.
