$220m Fine: Meta delists 63,000 Facebook accounts of alleged ‘Yahoo boys’ in Nigeria

63,000 “Yahoo Boys” Facebook accounts that belonged to Nigerians who were allegedly involved in financial extortion have been deleted by Meta.

This was revealed by the US-based company in a statement headlined “Combating Financial Sextortion Scams From Nigeria” on Wednesday.

The action was taken in the days following a $220 million fine that the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) of Nigeria levied against Meta and its instant messaging service, WhatsApp, for violating data privacy laws and engaging in discriminatory tactics against Nigerians.

Even though Meta had previously stated that it intended to challenge the punishment, it claimed that the 63,000 had been removed as a punitive measure against illegal activity.

“We’ve banned Yahoo Boys under Meta’s Dangerous Organizations and Individuals Policy — one of our strictest policies — which means we remove accounts of Yahoo Boys’ who engage in this criminal activity whenever we become aware of them.

“First, we removed around 63,000 accounts in Nigeria that attempted to directly engage in financial sextortion scams”, it stated.

ZINGTIE reports that Nigerian Internet scammers are referred to as “Yahoo Boys.”
