University of Ibadan students took to the streets of Ibadan yesterday, protesting the 82-day power outage at the University College Hospital (UCH). The blackout, caused by a disagreement between UCH and the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) over unpaid debts, has severely impacted students’ health and studies.

The protest, which started at the UCH main gate, proceeded through Total Garden to the State Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan. Students carried placards with messages like “Restore Our Electricity, We are suffering” as they chanted solidarity songs to draw attention to their plight.

Bolaji Aweda, President of the Students’ Union Government (SUG), emphasized that students at the College of Medicine, UCH, have faced immense hardship due to the lack of water and electricity. “We are protesting against what is happening. And, of course, our students are affected. For 82 days, there has been no light at UCH, and this is due to the inability of UCH to pay its electricity bill to IBEDC,” he said.

“IBEDC has demanded that UCH settle its debt before they will restore power,” he added. 

Aweda further stated that IBEDC has demanded UCH settle its debt before restoring power. The students submitted a letter to Governor Seyi Makinde, outlining their demands. Sunday Odukoya, Executive Assistant to the Governor on Security, commended the students for their peaceful protest and promised to relay their message to the governor.

The protest was peaceful, with security personnel from the Nigeria Police, Nigerian Army, and Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) maintaining law and order. The students’ actions highlight the urgent need for a resolution to the power outage, which has significantly impacted their education and well-being.
