Nollywood star Bimbo Akintola has expressed that infidelity and polygamy remain deeply rooted in Nigerian society and are unlikely to disappear.
Speaking during a podcast conversation with fellow actress Ayo Adesanya, Akintola claimed that a vast majority of Nigerian men are unfaithful, estimating the figure to be between 90 and 99 percent.
The 55-year-old actress linked this trend to longstanding cultural norms and generational habits, explaining that many men grow up in households where unfaithfulness is seen as acceptable behavior.
She noted that some men model their actions after their fathers, who often maintain multiple romantic relationships or have mistresses.
In her view, these deeply embedded social influences make it difficult for women to expect loyalty in romantic partnerships.
She said, “I don’t know where this idea of fidelity in Africa came from. Your father cheats, your grandfather cheated, my father has two wives.
“I can’t tell you whether to stay or leave but you leave this one and move to the next one, you still have the same issue. They all cheat, 90 percent of them cheat, it’s engraved in them.
“I know you might want to change them but I hear characters are fully formed when you’re seven years old. Some of them started by following their daddy to girlfriends’ house.
“I’m not excusing it don’t get me wrong, I am just being realistic when it comes to these kinds of situation.”
