The Edo State Government has issued a warning to cult members not to unlawfully assemble in the state under the pretence of commemorating their anniversary on July 7.

According to ZINGTIE, the warning was issued by State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation Chris Nehikhare in a statement that was provided to reporters on Saturday in Benin City.

According to Nehikhare, the state government has been notified by reputable security services that Aiye, also known as Black Axe, will be commemorating its anniversary on July 7, 2024.

He warned that attacks on other cult organisations might result from the celebration.

According to the commissioner, the State Government has ordered the state’s police force and other security services to be ready to detain and prosecute any group that disobeys the State Anti-Cultism Law.

He said, “As part of the renewed effort to tackle cultism in the State, the State Government has asked youths in the State to avoid any unlawful gathering on July 7, 2024 in the guise of celebrating the anniversary of any cult group.

“The State Government want to use this opportunity to remind cult groups and their members of the State Anti-Cultism Law which prohibits their activities.

“Parents and guardians should also warn their wards to avoid any gathering of cult groups as Government has placed the Police and other security agencies in the State to be on the watch out to arrest and prosecute any group that violates the State’s anti-cultism Law”, he said.

Nonetheless, he asked the public to go out their legitimate business as the security services are on high alert to protect people and property throughout the State.
