On Thursday, the Swedish government declared that it will greatly increase the payments given to immigrants who willingly return to their own countries.

The right-wing government of Sweden, backed by the anti-immigration Sweden Democrats, has announced that as part of this project, immigrants will be eligible to earn up to 350,000 Swedish kronor (about $34,000) starting in 2026.

According to Johan Forssell, the minister of migration, this action is a part of a “paradigm shift” in the nation’s immigration policy. At the moment, immigrants are given a maximum of 40,000 kronor per family, or up to 10,000 kronor for each adult and 5,000 kronor for each child. This offer, which has been available since 1984 but is comparatively unknown and underutilised, is intended to be more widely taken advantage of with the new measure.

The statement was made in spite of criticism from a recent government-appointed investigation that argued against a large increase because of cost-effectiveness issues. As part of its larger policy goal, the present administration, headed by Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, is concentrating on combating immigration and crime.

Since the 1990s, Sweden has welcomed a large number of migrants from war-torn nations such the former Yugoslavia, Syria, Afghanistan, Somalia, Iran, and Iraq; nevertheless, integration has not always been easy.
