The bill to create the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Federal University of Nigerian Languages has been approved for first reading by the House of Representatives. If the university were founded, it would be an addition to the other universities already in place.
The goal of the bill, which has eight sponsors including Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, is to encourage the study of Nigerian languages.
In the upcoming weeks, a second reading of the bill is anticipated, followed by a public hearing to get feedback from interested parties.
The university shall “encourage the advancement of learning and provide opportunities for all individuals, regardless of race, creed, sex, or political beliefs, to acquire higher education in Nigerian languages and cultures,” as stated in Section II, Part I of the bill.
In order to promote national development, it also aims to create academic and professional programs that result in certificates, degrees, and postgraduate research, with a focus on transferable skills in Nigerian languages and cultures.
Furthermore, it is suggested that, once founded, the university serve as a catalyst for efficiently employing Nigeria’s natural, economic, and human resources through postgraduate education, research, and innovation.
