Elise Stefanik has been named the United States’ ambassador to the United Nations (UN) by President-elect Donald Trump.

Trump said Stefanik was a smart fighter who was strong and tough.

“I am honoured to nominate Chairwoman Elise Stefanik to serve in my Cabinet as US Ambassador to the United Nations. Elise is an incredibly strong, tough, and smart America First fighter,” Trump said.

Stefanik, a lawmaker from New York and the chair of the House Republican Conference, has been an ardent supporter of Trump.

Trump defeated Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris by a significant margin and was re-elected to the White House.

The manager of his successful campaign, Susie Wiles, had been appointed chief of staff by the president-elect.

Wiles is the first female to occupy such a powerful position.
