A youth advocate, Ceekay Alden, has called for a seamless system for pension disbursement in Nigeria, emphasizing the need to prioritize the well-being of elderly citizens. “As an individual, I want to make it clear that the care and well-being of our elderly will always be a priority for me should I ever be in a position of power. It is a moral obligation, not just a policy decision,” Alden said.

Alden stressed that Nigeria must enact a transparent, easily accessible, and timely pension disbursement system to prevent elderly citizens from suffering in silence. He also noted that the government must reform the pension system to meet the needs of all retirees without unnecessary delays.

The youth advocate pointed out that many elderly citizens in Nigeria struggle to access their pensions due to long delays, bureaucratic hurdles, and negligence. “As of February 2025, countless pensioners have taken to social media, protesting the inhumane conditions they face while trying to access their hard-earned benefits,” Alden said

Alden cited the case of Mrs. Theresa Okafor, a retired school teacher who spent over a year waiting for her pension before passing away in 2023 without receiving a single payment. “Stories like hers are all too common, and they should stir a sense of responsibility in every one of us,” Alden said.

Alden urged the government to prioritize the welfare of elderly citizens, saying, “If our government truly seeks to build a nation that thrives, it must begin by protecting those who have already given so much to it.”

He emphasized that the government’s treatment of its elderly citizens reflects its values and priorities. “Let us not wait for more tragedies to spark change. Let us act now to ensure that our elders receive the respect, care, and dignity they deserve while they are still with us. This is not just a policy; it is a measure of our humanity.”

Alden’s call to action comes at a time when Nigeria is striving to emerge stronger and more prosperous. He believes that prioritizing the welfare of elderly citizens is essential to building a better future for the country.

“The Nigerian government must urgently prioritize the welfare of our elderly citizens, whose years of labor and service to this nation should be honored with dignity and care,” Alden said. “We owe it to ourselves, our children, and our elderly citizens to create a society that values and respects its most vulnerable members.”

As the government considers Alden’s proposal, many Nigerians are hopeful that meaningful change will come soon. The plight of elderly citizens like Mrs. Okafor has sparked widespread outrage and calls for reform.

Ultimately, Alden’s advocacy serves as a reminder that the treatment of elderly citizens is a reflection of a society’s values and priorities. By prioritizing their welfare, Nigeria can take a crucial step towards building a more just and compassionate society
