Aare Afe Babalola, SAN, Founder and Chancellor of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti, has been honoured with the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award by the Nigerian Branch of the International Law Association (ILA). This esteemed award recognises his outstanding contributions to international law, education, and nation-building.

The award ceremony took place during the President’s Dinner and Award Night at the 8th Annual International Law Conference of the Association, held at the university’s campus in Ado-Ekiti. Prof. Damilola Olawuyi, SAN, President of the ILA Nigerian Branch and UN Independent Expert on Business and Human Rights, presented the award, describing it as “the highest and most prestigious award of the ILA,” reserved for individuals whose lifetime contributions have significantly impacted international law and diplomacy.

Prof. Olawuyi praised Babalola’s remarkable contributions, saying, “Aare Afe Babalola’s remarkable contributions to food security, education, law, and nation-building are truly inspirational. He exemplifies what we strive to achieve as international lawyers: to educate, to empower, and to give back. His life is a blueprint for impactful service.”

During a keynote conversation moderated by Dr. Adenike Akinsemolu, Babalola reflected on his journey, emphasizing the transformative power of education. “My passion for education and service led me to establish ABUAD. I wanted to create a university that could serve as a model for excellence in Africa and beyond,” he said.

Babalola also highlighted the importance of entrepreneurial education and agriculture, stating, “With more investment and education in agriculture, Africa can become the food basket of the world. It is key to securing food, attracting foreign direct investment, and accelerating Nigeria’s development.”

– Ambassador Muhamadou Musa Njie, Gambia’s Ambassador to Nigeria

The evening also featured the presentation of the ILA Emerging Star Award to Emmanuel Latona Adedeji and the ILA Service Award to Ayodeji Asala, President of ABUAD’s ILA chapter.

Aare Afe Babalola’s achievements extend beyond law, as he has made significant contributions to education, establishing Afe Babalola University as a beacon of academic excellence. His commitment to philanthropy and advocacy for reform in various sectors has earned him numerous accolades, including the Officer of the Federal Republic (OFR) and Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON)
