Russia on Thursday blamed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for undermining diplomatic efforts aimed at achieving a peace agreement, following his recent refusal to acknowledge Russia’s claim over Crimea.

Maria Zakharova, a spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, stated that it was becoming increasingly evident that Zelenskyy lacked the capability to negotiate a resolution to the conflict.

Earlier in the week, Zelenskyy argued that accepting Crimea as Russian territory would go against Ukraine’s constitution. Ukrainian officials maintain that their goal remains a complete and unconditional ceasefire.

Previously, Ukraine agreed to a 30-day ceasefire after discussions with the United States. However, Russian President Vladimir Putin replied with a series of stipulations and inquiries, asserting that such a pause would allow Ukraine time to bolster its military forces and secure additional weaponry.

Zelenskyy and US President Donald Trump reportedly had another disagreement on Wednesday, with Trump criticizing the Ukrainian leader for not recognizing Russia’s annexation of Crimea, which took place in 2014.

Trump has recently indicated he may withdraw from efforts to mediate the conflict if Kyiv and Moscow fail to come to an agreement soon.

Zakharova also criticized European nations for continuing to provide military support to Kyiv, claiming such actions embolden Zelenskyy to prolong the conflict despite the loss of life.

She suggested that some European countries appear to be intimidated by the possibility of a Russian victory.
