The planned zoning structure for the All Progressives Congress’s (APC) 2026 governorship ticket in Osun State has been criticized by Senator Ajibola Basiru, the party’s national secretary.
On Monday, Basiru announced this on Facebook.
In addition to emphasizing that every qualified party member should have the right to run, the former senator from Osun Central Senatorial District strongly declared that zoning is not covered by the APC constitution.
Insisting on zoning, he added, weakens the democratic process and may drive away voters from areas that are left out.
He reaffirmed his opposition to zoning, emphasizing that competence and unity—rather than regional division—should be the main priorities.
He wrote, “When you insist on zoning, aren’t you going to canvass votes in other zones whose aspirants you have denied?” he questioned in his post.
“Zoning is not in our constitution. People should be free to contest. When you insist on zoning, aren’t you going to canvass votes in other zones whose aspirants you have denied? I’m not in support of zoning. – Senator Ajibola Basiru, PhD.”
APC stakeholders and other interested parties have been pushing for the party’s guber ticket to be zoned to the Osun West Senatorial District, which coincided with Basiru’s zoning refusal.
Additionally, the Osun APC is leaning toward a certain candidate from the Osun West Senatorial District who is purportedly supported by Adegboyega Oyetola, the state’s immediate former governor and minister of marine and blue economy.
Before taking on the role of national scribe for the APC, Basiru served as the senator for Osun Central Senatorial District from 2019 to 2023. However, he lost his seat to senator Fadeyi Oluwole Olubiyi of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
