The President of the Rotary Club of Ikeja, Oluwakayode Situ, explained that the facility will empower students with vocational skills in areas such as barbing, shoemaking, hairdressing, and tailoring. “If you give a man fish or bread, you have only fed him for that one time. But if you teach him how to fish or how to bake bread, then he will feed himself for life,” Situ remarked.
The initiative aligns with the Lagos State Government’s plan to integrate vocational training into the school curriculum, and the Rotary Club has obtained approval from the Ministry of Basic Education. The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Balogun, represented by Permanent Secretary Abisola Adegbite, praised the club’s efforts, saying, “The club’s outstanding efforts to serve the community, especially through this CSR initiative, are truly appreciated.”
District Governor Dr. Oluwole Kukoyi commended the Rotary Club of Ikeja for the transformative project, while Chairman of Lafarge Cement WAPCO Plc, Chief Olusegun Osunkeye, charged students to make the most of the opportunity. The school’s principal, Ayo Quadri, thanked the Rotary Club and assured that the centre would be put to proper use.
The vocational training centre is part of Rotary International’s focus on basic education and literacy, and the club plans to fully equip the facility with the help of its members and friends.
