The sudden resignation of Goodluck Ihemnacho, the designated Administrator of Ahoada East Local Government Area, has sparked a new round of controversy in Rivers State.

In a letter dated June 20, 2025, sent to the Sole Administrator’s office, Ihemnacho, one of the 23 LG administrators appointed by the state’s Sole Administrator, Retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, announced his resignation.

His departure is attributed to a return to private life in the letter, which has now gone viral on social media.

In it, he thanked the Ahoada East government and citizens for giving him the chance to serve.

He wrote, “I humbly write to your noble office to convey to you my resignation as the Administrator, Ahoada East LGA… My sincere gratitude goes to the government of Rivers State and the good people of Ahoada East for finding me worthy to serve… from 11th day of April 2025 to 20th day of July 2025.”

However, his resignation has raised more questions than it has answered.

According to those with knowledge of the situation, Ihemnacho might have resigned under pressure.

A gang of unidentified individuals allegedly broke into the Ahoada East council secretariat, physically abused the administrator, and made him sign the resignation letter, according to one of the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Observers have pointed out a blatant inaccuracy in the letter, which adds to the suspicion: although the resignation was dated June 20, the dates referenced extend to July 20. Since then, the secretariat has been closed, and police are said to have taken over the building.

Additionally, there is conjecture that Ihemnacho’s departure could be connected to plans to run for office in the upcoming municipal elections. The idea that he might have willingly resigned in expectation of a more politically calculated action is unproven.

In any case, the move represents the first visible flaw in the framework of the Ibas-led temporary local government administration, which was only put into place in April. The departure may represent deeper undercurrents in the state’s hostile political scene, which has only been in place for a little more than three months.
