Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin has reaffirmed his unwavering allegiance to President Bola Tinubu, stating that he is ready to carry out any task assigned to him by the President.

His remarks come amid rising speculation regarding who might be selected as Tinubu’s vice-presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections.

Barau made this statement during a press briefing focused on the upcoming regional public hearings organized by the Senate Committee on Constitution Review. During the session, he addressed growing public support for him to potentially run alongside Tinubu in the next presidential race.

“I don’t want to say anything about this now because one point is very clear. Mr. President, since the inception of this administration, has been trying so hard to change the trajectory of the country in a way that will bring prosperity to the nation.

“So, bringing this issue is quite premature. That’s why I told those groups frankly, I don’t know them. I thank them for believing in me. But I told them, ‘Instead of wasting energy on things that are not relevant now, channel your resources to supporting the President. When the time comes, we’ll play politics. But this time is for governance’.

“Mr. President is my political father. You’ll be surprised if I start telling you what he has done for me and my people. So, whenever he asks me to do something when the time comes, I’ll do it. I’m very loyal to him.

“So, if the time comes and he says I should work with him, I will do it, whatever he asks me to do, I’ll do. I’m loyal to him, 100 per cent,” he said.

Barau also provided insight into the scheduled public hearings on constitutional amendments, which he is overseeing as chair of the review committee.

He explained that the committee is examining 59 proposed bills and 31 additional submissions, with more expected via written contributions from the public.

The South-South session will be in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom, and will be presided over by Senate President Godswill Akpabio or his delegate. Barau will personally lead the North-West session in Kano, while the South-West forum in Lagos will be chaired by Senate Leader Senator Michael Opeyemi Bamidele.

Other locations include Jos for the North-Central zone, under Deputy Senate Leader Senator Lola Ashiru; Maiduguri for the North-East, led by Chief Whip Senator Mohammed Tahir Monguno; and Enugu for the South-East, which will be headed by Deputy Chief Whip Senator Peter Nwebonyi.
