Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, has stated that the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), should not be viewed as a prerequisite for the South-East’s support of President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections.
Speaking with journalists on Friday night in Lagos, Umahi refuted claims that the region had attached conditions such as Kanu’s release to backing the President.
“Somebody asked me about Nnamdi Kanu, and I said his matter is not a condition for the South-East to support the President.
“We are willing to negotiate his release, but no one should make it a condition because the President did not put him there,” Umahi said.
He characterized President Tinubu as a responsive leader and maintained that Kanu’s release would eventually result from divine intervention and constructive dialogue, rather than coercion or political demands.
“President Tinubu may not be perfect, but he is doing most things right.
“Look at where he picked up the economy from. The international community has confidence in his reforms. That is why we are getting support for our projects,” he added.
Umahi pointed to several major infrastructure developments under the Tinubu administration across the South-East, including road rehabilitation projects long neglected by previous governments.
“Let those criticising the President show us what they have done for the country,” he said.
He also dismissed suggestions that the South-East was being excluded from key federal appointments, insisting that Tinubu had offered the region more attention than many past administrations.
Umahi called for greater cooperation among political figures, regardless of party affiliation, and observed that South-East governors including those from opposition parties were collaborating effectively with the President.

He concluded by affirming that he has no political ambitions for the 2027 presidential election.
“I will not run. I will work for my boss, President Tinubu.
“APC is the path to achieving what we want. The South-East now has a voice at the centre. We will not return to Egypt,” he said.
