The Federal Government has introduced a comprehensive tax reform initiative designed to ease compliance, lower the financial pressure on small-scale businesses and low-income citizens, and boost national revenue generation.
During a public awareness event held yesterday at the International Conference Centre in Enugu, Mrs. Chioma Nweze, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement for the Southeast region, addressed attendees. She emphasized President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to creating a more equitable tax system that directly benefits ordinary Nigerians.
“Our women, especially market women, must understand why government collects tax, what government does with it, and how they should pay without exploitation.
“The president has removed fuel subsidy, unified the exchange rate, and increased allocations to states. These reforms will ensure more projects are delivered to benefit citizens,” she said.
Nweze underscored that the focus on educating women was intentional, pointing to historical precedents such as the 1929 Aba Women’s Riot, which was triggered by unjust tax practices.
“When women are informed, they carry the message to their families and communities. We don’t want exploitative practices to return; instead, women should be empowered to benefit from government initiatives,” she said.
Barrister Chukwumeka Eze, who heads the Southeast Zone of the Tax Appeal Tribunal, shared a presentation at the event where he explained that four new tax-related laws were enacted on June 26, 2025. These laws consolidate over 20 previously separate tax statutes into a unified framework.
Eze mentioned that companies generating less than N50 million annually are now exempt from paying Companies Income Tax and Value Added Tax. Additionally, workers earning the national minimum wage are no longer required to pay personal income tax.
“This is progressive taxation. The rich will now pay more within their means, while the poor will be protected. The days when wealthy individuals paid little tax are gone,” Eze stressed.
He also revealed that the reforms include the introduction of a new Tax Dispute Resolution Mechanism. This system allows citizens to submit complaints at no cost, with guaranteed feedback within 7 to 14 days.
Adding to the discussion, Mr. Innocent Chinyere Ohagwa, a Chartered Accountant and tax expert, supported the reform efforts, describing them as essential for reinforcing Nigeria’s financial stability. He emphasized the importance of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to the national economy.

“SMEs account for more than 90% of businesses and nearly 60% of jobs in Nigeria. By removing multiple taxation and unfair levies, government is giving them space to grow, create wealth, and support economic diversification,” he said.
Dr. Zino Ugboma, representing the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), highlighted how public revenue from taxes is being allocated toward expanding educational access.
He explained that students in universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education are now eligible for loans that cover tuition and living expenses. These loans are only to be repaid once beneficiaries secure employment, starting two years after completing NYSC.
“This is a direct way of showing that taxation is not just about collection, but also about giving back to the people,” Ugboma said.
The sensitization program, attended by representatives from the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), women leaders, professionals, and grassroots stakeholders, ended with a collective call for stronger collaboration to ensure the reforms succeed.
Among those present, Mrs. Nnenna Otuonye praised President Tinubu for steering Nigeria toward a more just taxation model and urged citizens in the Southeast to comply with the new policies to support national growth.
