In an unexpected political shift, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has achieved significant gains in the recently concluded State Assembly by-elections in Taraba State an area traditionally dominated by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) confirmed the APC’s success, declaring its candidates winners after the final vote tally across the affected constituencies.

These elections were conducted to fill legislative seats left vacant due to the death or resignation of former members.

Abner Shittu, the APC candidate for Karim 1 constituency, emerged victorious over his PDP opponent, securing a decisive win that further challenges the PDP’s grip on the state.

According to election monitors, the by-elections were marked by orderly proceedings and a modest voter turnout. INEC expressed appreciation to voters, security personnel, and its officials for ensuring a seamless process, and reiterated its commitment to fair, credible, and inclusive electoral practices.

Reacting to the development, the APC in Taraba hailed the outcome as a reflection of the electorate’s growing trust in its policies. The party credited the victory to effective grassroots outreach and strategic communication with local residents.

The election outcome has since generated broad political discussion. Some political analysts described the APC’s showing especially in Karim 1 as a serious signal to the PDP ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“The APC’s victory, small as it may appear, is a loud warning for the PDP. It shows that politics is no longer about assumed loyalty. It’s about strategy, visibility and connection with the people,” an analyst said.

Observers attributed the APC’s success to its consistent groundwork and its ability to take advantage of divisions within the PDP, including internal disunity and a lack of coordination.

“Karim-1 should not be viewed as just a by-election. It reflects the current mood of the electorate. Voter loyalty is shifting, and the PDP must act decisively if it wants to remain relevant,” another analyst commented.

With these latest gains, the APC has not only increased its presence in the Taraba State House of Assembly but also delivered a strong political message heading into future elections.

Looking ahead to 2027, analysts caution that unless the PDP addresses its internal conflicts, restructures, and reconnects with its support base, the APC could strengthen its position even in regions once seen as opposition territory.

As of the time this report was filed, the PDP had not yet made an official statement regarding the by-election results.
