Prof. Idia Ize-Iyamu has stated that her emergence as the new Chief Medical Director of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) sends a powerful message to young girls across Nigeria — that no ambition is beyond reach when one is determined to succeed.

She shared this during her inaugural address upon officially taking over as the first female Chief Medical Director in the 52-year history of the hospital on Monday, August 18, 2025, in Benin City.

A professor of dentistry and orthodontics, Ize-Iyamu has also made history as the first dental professional to assume the role.

She succeeded Prof. Darlington Obaseki, who completed his eight-year service on Sunday, August 17, 2025.

Reflecting on the significance of her appointment, she emphasized that her leadership role is not an anomaly but rather a testament to what can be achieved when excellence is recognized and opportunities are embraced with readiness.

“I carry this responsibility as a message to every girl child in Nigeria; there are no ceilings too high, no doors too heavy, and no dreams too distant when you strive to excel.

“I bear it as a promise to my female colleagues, we will not simply pass through this door; we will hold it open. We will mentor, sponsor, and lift as we climb, so that the future leadership of our health system reflects not only the talent and tenacity already at work, but also the enduring legacy of impact and eminence we are building together”, she said.

Prof. Ize-Iyamu reiterated that UBTH remains a space where aspirations can be fulfilled, hard work is acknowledged, and the path forward always remains open to innovation and growth.

Calling her appointment the beginning of a “dawn of new possibilities,” she committed to leading with empathy, forward-thinking strategies, and a dedication to raising the standard of healthcare services.

She outlined her leadership vision under the acronym “UBTH CARES”: C for Care, A for Advancement, R for Revitalisation, E for Employee Welfare, and S for Sustainability a blueprint that will shape her administration.

Prof. Ize-Iyamu also pledged to transform UBTH into a center of cutting-edge medical advancement a place where empathy and professionalism work hand in hand, and where leadership is defined by integrity.

She further vowed to upgrade healthcare infrastructure and enhance staff well-being, aligning her plans with President Bola Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” initiative aimed at overhauling Nigeria’s health sector.

In conclusion, she reaffirmed her unwavering commitment to excellence and her intention to support the national goal of providing fair, affordable, and dependable healthcare for every Nigerian.

“I am profoundly grateful to the President, Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for the confidence reposed in me through this appointment. I pledge my total commitment to the “Renewed Hope” Agenda, particularly in the health sector, which seeks to restore faith in public institutions and deliver accessible, affordable, and of the highest standard.

“My sincere gratitude also goes to the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, for his recommendation and the trust he has placed in me. Honourable Minister, I assure you of my absolute dedication to excellence and to support the national drive for equitable, cost-effective, and reliable healthcare for all Nigerians,” she stated.
