A deepening crisis is unfolding at Federal University Oye-Ekiti, where suspended Vice-Chancellor Professor Abayomi Fasina has refused to relinquish control to newly appointed Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Samuel Olubunmi Shittu. Despite a clear directive from the university’s Governing Council, Fasina continues to act as though he remains in charge, locking the Vice-Chancellor’s office and diverting official correspondence and university vehicles to his personal residence.

Fasina was suspended on April 14, 2025, following allegations of sexual harassment made by senior university official Engineer Folasade Adebayo. The Governing Council, in response to the serious nature of the allegation, directed Fasina to proceed on his accumulated annual leave while appointing Professor Shittu as the Acting Vice-Chancellor in the interim.

The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, reportedly expressed strong dissatisfaction with the initial recommendation of the university’s Governing Council Committee, which allegedly ignored the sexual harassment claims and instead recommended that Adebayo apologize to Fasina. Ndoma-Egba, Chairman of the Governing Council, convened an emergency virtual meeting, leading to Fasina’s suspension and Shittu’s appointment.

Fasina’s actions have raised concerns about his disregard for the Council’s authority, with sources describing his behavior as “a dangerous precedent”. The Acting Vice-Chancellor faces challenges in asserting his authority, with Fasina allegedly instructing him to seek his approval for all actions
