Zuru town in Kebbi State witnessed a complete halt in commercial and social life as prominent dignitaries, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, Emir of Kano, Alhaji Sunusi Lamido Sanusi, and Governor Nasir Idris, gathered to honour the late Emir of Zuru, Major General Muhammad Sani Sami (rtd).

The revered traditional ruler died on the night of August 16 in a London hospital at the age of 81. He was laid to rest at his private residence in Zuru seven days later.

His body, flown in aboard an aircraft with registration 5N-DOY, landed at the Zuru Airstrip at approximately 11:43 a.m. on Friday. He was accompanied by Governor Idris, along with his wives and children. Not long after, the Emir of Kano and other traditional rulers arrived around 12:00 p.m.

Vice President Shettima, who represented President Bola Tinubu, landed at about 1:58 p.m. in a NAF 205 aircraft. He proceeded directly to Zuru Central Mosque, where the funeral rites were conducted.

The town observed total closure of markets and shops, while major roads and routes leading to the mosque were crowded with mourners.

The funeral prayer was led by the Chief Imam of Zuru Central Mosque, Alhaji Suleiman Muhammad-Tanko, shortly after the two raka’at of the Friday prayer.

The Vice President, alongside the Sultan of Sokoto, Emir of Kano, Emir of Yauri, Emir of Gummi, Emir of Anka, Governor Idris, and retired Lt Gen. AbdurRahman Dambazau, were present at the burial site located at the late Emir’s residence.

While offering condolences to the bereaved family, Shettima described the passing of the former Military Administrator of Bauchi State as a significant national loss.

In his short speech, Shettima said: “This is a sad day for the entire nation, this is a sad day for the people of Kebbi State and indeed for the entire Nigerians.

“I am here on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to convey the condolences of Mr President to the Kebbi State Government, the entire Northern Nigeria and the people of Zuru Emirate over to the demise of a man who spent all his life to serve the entire nation and to facilitate peace and unity,” he said.
